SkADaMo ~ Day 6

Caricature practice with Magic Johnson.

Caricature practice with Magic Johnson.

The History Channel tells that on this day in history, Earvin “Magic” Johnson retired from The Lakers suddenly after having tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. I was in high school when this happened and I remember it well. The news shocked the world and seemed to put HIV into a whole new light. Till this time people had thought that HIV and AIDS was contracted by gay men, drug users and, to put it nicely, the promiscuous. I wasn’t a huge basketball fan, but I enjoyed hearing about Magic, along with Jordan, Pippen, and Bird. Basketball just wasn’t the same after Magic retired. Even Michael Jordan seemed to be a bit lost with leaving basketball a few years later and trying out baseball only to return and leave again. Crazy 90s. Until just last month, Magic was employed with ESPN NBA. It appears as though basketball will always be a part of his life. Thanks for the memories, Magic Johnson.

    • That’s awesome! I’ve read that he bought over 100 Starbuck’s in a partnership, Urban Coffee Opportunities to bring Starbuck’s to urban areas. He also works to bring movie theaters to those same areas. Thanks for the comment, Heather. Much love to ewe!
